The mud pond makes a great swimming hole in the summertime, a scenic view in the fall and a ice-skating rink in the winter.
Yes, Mikel and the kids swim with the fish--hundreds of them!
Mikel drains this pond every Spring to net out the Koi. There are usually 500 or more fish that he needs to move to new homes.
Last Spring, Mikel put on a "Koi Auction" with the proceeds going to the Capital Area Koi and Water Gardening Club."
At one time, Mikel had goldfish in this pond--worse than guppies---they multiplied to thousands. He had to pump the pond dry to get rid of them. Other problems include muskrats that burrow in the bank, heavy heron predation, and deer eating all the lilies.
